SMITH WOOTON

The SMITH WOOTON label is designated for use on very small lots of wine made from exceptional grapes. In 1999, Mr. Wooton produced the first commercial SMITH WOOTON wine, Cabernet Franc. His Cabernet Franc has received double gold medals at the San Francisco Chronicle tasting.

In 2000 he added Zinfandel Port. Gary currently produces Cabernet Franc from Napa Valley’s Silverado Trail
and Syrah and Petit Verdot from the Sierra Foothills.

Like most of us, Gary Wooton began his love of wine as a consumer. In 1982 he began making his own wine as a home winemaker.
His first wine, a Pinot Noir, won gold medals around the state and Gary has since spent years taking classes at Santa Rosa Community College, UC Davis and Napa Community College to determine what he did right! Since that time, he has made numerous award winning wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Rosé Cabernet Port, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Late Harvest Zinfandel, Zinfandel Port, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Since 1991, he has been affiliated with The Loyal Order of the Grape Knife, a winemaking group in Healdsburg, CA which specializes in Zinfandel.

In 1997, Gary formed Avatar Vintners, Inc. to produced handcrafted Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Avatar would become the embodiment of the philosophy of its winemaker:  Handcrafting of fine wines is an art form.

Each year the grapes provide a unique challenge that requires new solutions to bring the wine to its greatest potential. Grapes are gently crushed and stemmed, leaving many whole berries and fermentation is slow and cool to enhance the fruit flavors. The grapes are always handled gently, to avoid extraction of harsh tannins. Wine is aged in French oak barrels, chosen to compliment the special characteristics of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. These methods create a Bordeaux style wine that is ready to drink at release but will continue to improve for years to come.
