A Lazy Tale

(landscapes of McLaren Vale by James Hook)

Lazy Ballerina is the project of winemaker James Hook and his family.  James Hook wrote his first paper on wine at age fifteen; since then he has been following his destiny to make only the greatest wine.  In 2004 the Hooks took grapes from two classic McLaren Vale vineyards and the Lazy Ballerina Shiraz was born.

The name “lazy ballerina” refers to a trellis system and the way the vines are pruned to look like a ballerina’s tutu.  The trellis acts as a solar panel, capturing the sun’s energy and insulating the fruit which produces incredibly ripe and even racy grapes.  The Hooks utilize a low impact viticulture approach with natural and sustainable methods free of synthetics.

The Hooks do not produce large quantities of wine, but rather focus on using only the highest quality grapes, and following painstaking and time consuming production techniques that ensure only the best wine.  Making good wine takes time; something that larger wineries and corporations cannot afford, and something that is apparent in every sip of Lazy B.  The grapes are fermented very slowly, and the wine is basket pressed which allows the wine to have its intense flavor without the typical harsh tannins.  Through all this extensive hard work and attention to small scale detail the McLaren Vale’s lazy vines are turned into Lazy Ballerina, offering an exquisite drinking experience for the lazy drinker- eat, drink, and be lazy!
